How pace is calculated
Pace = time ÷ distance. Everything else here is that rearranged:
time = pace × distance, distance = time ÷ pace. Speed is the
reciprocal, speed = 1 ÷ pace.
Two details calculators get wrong the mile, and the half marathon
- A mile is exactly 1609.344 metres. Round it to 1609 or 1.6 km and a marathon prediction moves by several seconds. This page uses the exact figure.
- A half marathon is 21.0975 km, not 21. The last split row lands on the true distance, so the final cumulative time is your finish time, not your 21 km time with the last 97.5 metres missing.
Splits here are cumulative and at an even pace. For a plan that starts conservatively and finishes faster, use the pace band generator.
Pace to finish time
What each pace is worth over the standard distances, run evenly. For the same thing at 5-second steps, and keyed by mile pace as well, see the full pace chart.

Questions
How do you calculate running pace?
Divide the time by the distance. A 50-minute 10K is 3000 seconds over 10 km, which is 300 seconds per kilometre, or 5:00 min/km. To go the other way, multiply. 5:00 min/km across a half marathon is 300 × 21.0975 = 6329 seconds, or 1:45:29.
What is a good running pace?
It depends on the distance, your training and your age, so there is no single answer. Two comparisons tell you more than the raw number. An age grade scores your time against the world standard for your age and sex. An equivalent time tells you what your 5K is worth over a marathon.
What pace do I need to run a sub-4-hour marathon?
5:41 per kilometre, or 9:09 per mile: 14,400 seconds divided by 42.195 km. Most runners aim a few seconds faster than that. GPS almost always measures a road marathon slightly long, and the last few kilometres cost more than the first.
Is min/km the same as min/mile?
No. A mile is 1609.344 metres, so a pace per mile is always the bigger number. Multiply a min/km pace by 1.609 to get min/mile: 5:00 min/km is 8:03 min/mile.
How do I work out my pace per mile from a kilometre pace?
Multiply by 1.609. A 5:00 min/km pace is 5 × 1.609 = 8.05 minutes per mile, which is 8:03 — the decimal is a fraction of a minute, not seconds, so 0.05 minutes is 3 seconds, not 5. Going the other way, divide by 1.609.
